Nov 7: Make A Dance

Chris Black (she/her)

Chris will lead a warm-up, then guide a collaborative and playful process of dance-making, culminating in a short piece we will perform for ourselves. Emphasis on crafting movement as creative/theatrical expression versus technical training.

Nov 14: Skinner Releasing Technique (getting in to get out to get in)

Julie Mayo (she/her)

In Releasing class, we will experiment with movement improvisation through the tuning of our perceptions in stillness and spontaneous movement. Supported by the space in and around us, as well as the room as a whole, we will utilize various kinds of music/sound, guided kinesthetic imagery and hands-on partner studies. Through our practice together, we will cultivate letting go of unnecessary tension(s) and, at one’s own pace, allow for new movement possibilities to arise.

Nov 21: Expressive Contemporary Dance and Partnering

Neva Cockrell (she/her)

We will explore expressing different qualities while dancing both set and improvised material. It’s a wonderful thing to know how and what you easily express through your body. For example you may get feedback that you are grateful, or strong, or precise, etc. We will hone in on our natural strengths as well as explore qualities that we don’t express as frequently. Through this practice we can expand not only our artistic range of expression, but perhaps also, our range within our day to day life. Class will begin with a somatically inspired warm up. Then we’ll make our way through set and improvised material, sometimes working solo, sometimes working with partners. Throughout class we will be practicing the fundamentals of contemporary dance and partnering. By the end of class we’ll be exploring a variety of qualities of movement alone and with others.

Dec 5: Cancelled due to weather!

Dec 12: Tool Kit for A Creative Movement Practice

Jerylann Warner (she/her)

In this session Jerylann will introduce and deconstruct a traditional dance class format for participants to create within. We will explore what helps a body feel ready to move, as well as what feels satisfying physically and creatively.
