The workshop will begin with a Releasing warm-up and move into improvisational scores and invitations that we will play with in small group format. We will allow for our creative impulses to find form through working with one another integrating our imaginations, physicality and sensory selves. Informally, we will share our performances at the end of the workshop and allow time for conversation. This workshop is open to all, with or without formal training in dance or performance.
*Releasing uses poetic imagery that ignites spontaneous movement and deepens internal and external awareness while refining our perception and performance of movement.
Anyone interested in experimenting in movement and / or theater improvising/making (limited number of slots)
“Julie’s class is a subtle and powerful invigorating of the creative process. Soft container, well held by Julie, allowing free flowing conversation, profound witnessing, and an improvisational process of making with a masterful focus on time.” ~ Vanessa, dancer, poet, middle-child
Julie Mayo has been making dances, performing and teaching for over 25 years. She values intuition as an active agent in improvising and choreographic thinking, and an ongoing questioning of what constitutes a dance/performance. Her work has been a Critic’s Pick in The New York Times and has been supported through residencies at Movement Research (NYC,), Gibney Dance (NYC), UCross (WY), Djerassi (CA) and others. She has been commissioned by individual artists to mentor their performance projects, most recently through NYS Choreographers Initiative. Julie has been a guest artist at many colleges and universities and currently teaches through Movement Research, her own and other platforms.
